• Like to make a difference?
  • Have a spare hour a month (or more)?
  • Like great music?

MBS Light would love your help! We’re part of 4MBS Classic FM – did you know we have about 300 volunteers? They are very important to our day-to-day operations, producing and presenting the lovely programs you listen to, and generally keeping the station running smoothly!

Our volunteers keep 4MBS and MBS Light on the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Without them, the station would not exist, and many music lovers would lose an alternative source of fine music. 4MBS volunteers are dedicated people interested in community radio, fine music, and the opportunity to associate with other music lovers and support South East Queensland’s vast range of talent. Volunteers also bring their own diverse range of talents to 4MBS, and we welcome volunteers from any background to contribute to our station and community!

If you’d like to volunteer your skills and be a part of the 4MBS community, run your eye over the list of roles below.

How much time do volunteers need to give? This depends on the activity, and how much time you can give. Some volunteers make very valuable contributions to the operation of 4MBS by giving just an hour or two a month, or an hour or two a week. Others are involved on a more regular basis.

Volunteering not only contributes to providing a wonderful music service, but it can also provide very valuable job skills for people currently seeking employment in many different fields.

If you’d like to know more about becoming a 4MBS volunteer, call us on 07 3847 1717 during business hours or send us an email.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES – JOB DESCRIPTIONS

ProgrammingDo you love compiling music playlists? This is the volunteering job for you! Prepare on-air programs with music from the station’s library or your own collection. We have a few guidelines to ensure that our listeners aren’t say, hit with Mozart’s Requiem first thing in the morning. That’s why our comprehensive Programmer’s Manual, which provides the essential information for programmers, is available for perusal in the Station’s library.
Program Guide TypingEach month we publish a Program Guide, which lists nearly every piece of music broadcast on 4MBS. That’s why we always need volunteers to type program listings on a computer from the program sheets. You’ll need word processing skills and some knowledge of classical music is an advantage.
Announcing
(Classical & Jazz)
Perhaps you have a voice for radio! Our announcers present programs prepared either by our programmers or by themselves (depending on the program). Prospective announcers are interviewed by the Broadcasts Manager and, if suitable, are given individual tuition.
Library SupervisingMost of the music you hear on 4MBS is played from CDs found in our library, but CDs don’t jump off the shelves on their own! Each day we need Library Supervisors to collect the relevant CDs from our shelves for the following days’ programs, and put them on our dedicated shelf ready for announcers. Some knowledge of classical music is an advantage.
Library Computer CataloguingWhen musicians or record labels send us new CDs, the details of the CDs need to be entered into our computer database. If you have basic computer skills and a good knowledge of classical music, this may suit you.
Subscriber Support Services Our subscribers are vital to us, so this role involves dealing with enquiries from subscribers regarding TicketSave cards, changes of address, and sending tax deductible donations. Good word processing skills and a pleasant telephone manner are required.
ReceptionThis is a very important part of the Station’s operations as it’s often the first point of contact for potential subscribers, sponsors etc. The work involves answering incoming calls, handling enquiries about new subscriptions and any current activity of the station. A pleasant telephone manner and willingness to stay up-to-date with our activities and events are important.
Program Guide Assembly and/or DeliveryOne morning a month, our printed Program Guides have to be packaged with a small number of inserts, placed into plastic sleeves and labeled, in order to be delivered to subscribers. If you don’t mind a little bit of physical activity while chatting to fellow music lovers, this could suit you. Or, if you’d be happy to deliver Program Guides to Subscribers in your neighbourhood (or wherever you’d like to travel to), and can dedicate a couple of hours a month, consider becoming a Program Guide Deliverer.
Concert Recording Team 4MBS Classic FM records well over 100 concerts a year of local and international performers, to be broadcast on air. If you have an interest in recording concerts or being involved in producing the finished product (editing and burning a CD for broadcast) we can train you to become part of our Concert Recording Team. Most concert recordings take place in the evenings or weekends, but production work can be done at any time.
